Collection: Bodega Castillo Viejo

A Legend, with origin around 1875 in a small Pyrenees village called Hasparren, states that the new world could be seen from the highest tower of the old castle, and that anyone who sees it would have fortune and peace.

Mr Santos Etcheverry, the youngest child of an entrepreneur Basque-French family of the village, was fascinated by the Legend enclosed in that old castle. That led him to cross the Atlantic Ocean and turn his dreams into a proud legacy. Such legacy began in Uruguay in 1927, on the part of the Etcheverry family third generation who founded Castillo Viejo Winery, and has been built for more than 100 years of hard work, firm commitment and values transmitted from generation to generation.

Is that heritage of quality commitment and continuous improvement in every process which makes their wines to be such an excellent experience, and Castillo Viejo to be such a recognized winery both in Uruguay and outside the country.

Bodega Castillo Viejo

Terroir

Castillo Viejo's terroir is located in San José, right at the 33 south parallel, cradle of the best New World wines, same location as Mendoza (Argentina) and part of Chile, South Africa and Australia. Soils in this region are wavy, clay loan, moderately fertile and a bit acidic, which are ideal for vine cultivation. The maritime and template weather from its nearness to the Atlantic Ocean and to the Río de la Plata coasts, together with its cold winters, dry summers, cool nights and morning mists during the maturation period, allow Castillo Viejo to obtain excellent quality grapes that reflects the Terroir features.

A sustainable use of natural resources is pursued every time in the process, retaining the unique features of the Terroir and its high maritime influence, with low intervention, no fertilizing or irrigation, and a simple pruning. This allow Castillo Viejo to obtain a very selective harvest per hectare, which means getting the expected quality and authenticity.

Bodega Castillo Viejo

Vineyard

Located in San José Department, and with an area of 54 hectares of own vineyards, Castillo Viejo Winery provides itself with the best raw materials. The vineyard is composed of the most prominent varieties, such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Viognier, Tannat, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Pinot Noir and Marselan. Our vineyard is oriented to produce high quality vine.

Winery

The Winery's total production capacity is of 50.000 fine wine boxes per year. By a laboratory equipped with state of the art technology, they rigorously control the whole production process, from temperature during fermentation, which has to be lower than 16°C for white wines and lower than 29°C for red wines, to decantation, tartaric stabilization and filtration during bottling. Wine physical and sensory analysis are also carried out continuously. With a stable temperature all over the year, their underground wine cellar houses the oak barrels, an old tradition Castillo Viejo Winery continues as an art, which gives aromas and flavours to wine, and improves their bouquet and soul. Of French and American origin, and from different forests, the barrels present medium to heavy toast, offering an exquisite complexity that grants the excellence, expression, elegance and personality they seek for to make each one of their great wines to differentiate.

Quality management

Castillo Viejo's obsession for quality starts in the vineyard and then continues with a handmade harvest, selecting grapes one by one, the fermentation at the winery, following each wine characteristic criteria, the careful bottle rest and the delivery to final destination. Nowadays, their total production capacity is of 50.000 fine wine boxes per year, which are obtained exclusively from their own vineyard grapes. The whole production process is controlled and overseen by their Oenologist team.

Environmental management

As they care for the environment, Castillo Viejo treat their lands and crops in the most natural and sensitive way, developing sustainable production processes. No irrigation, herbicides or pesticides are used in their vineyard. They normally use mineral fungicides and organic fertilizers only when absolutely necessary. Grapes are a hundred percent handpicked, mainly at night and twice if necessary, in order to obtain a bunch with the exact level of grape maturity. They grow and harvest manually 54 hectares of Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon, High and Low Density Cabernet Franc and Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Gewürztraminer. They also grow Tempranillo, Pinot Noir and Marselan in small quantities.
